Got this big tom last Monday while hunting some private property about 1-1/2 hours west of here. I was hunting with a state-trouper friend of mine, who happens to be an excellent “caller!”
We originally were set up in a pop-up blind in a fence row, but decided to “run and gun” after seeing only one bird from the blind. On our third try, from various locations, we hit pay dirt. Britt worked seven Toms into our lone Jake decoy, and I “popped” the biggest one. It had a 10-1/2 inch beard and spurs over an inch. Six of the Toms were mature with only one being a Jake. The hunt was over by 9:30 a.m.
While in the woods we saw deer, geese, ducks, several turtles, rabbits, and heard many pheasants. It was a great morning to be outside, and it sure beats buying a turkey at the grocery store.
